How to read the light on a Tygerberg-slope home — north, west, east and south — and choose shading that tames a low four-o'clock summer sun without giving up the view the house was built around. Free to read, written for this slope specifically.

Welgemoed shades differently to the rest of Cape Town, and it comes down to where the suburb sits. Built across the northern slopes of the Tygerberg at about 310 metres — the highest suburb in the city — its big family homes are turned outward to the view down over Bellville and the Cape Flats. But a home built to face a view is built around a lot of glass, and glass is what the Cape summer punishes. One blockout blind on every window “solves” that by throwing away the view you paid for. This guide walks the house elevation by elevation, names the product we’d specify and why — and, just as honestly, where the cheaper option wins.
Why the four-o’clock sun, not the noon sun, is the one that ruins a Welgemoed room.
Cape Town sits at about 34° south, so the midday sun is always in the northern sky and north-facing rooms get light all day. What changes through the year is the angle, and the numbers below are calculated from that latitude rather than quoted. In high summer (late December) the noon sun climbs to roughly 80° — almost straight overhead — so a normal eave or first-floor overhang shades north glass at midday without a blind doing anything. In midwinter (June) that same noon sun drops to about 33°, low enough to reach deep into north rooms, which in a wet Cape winter is welcome free warmth you don’t want to block off permanently.
The problem is the west. In summer the sun sits low from about 15:00, firing almost horizontally at west- and north-west-facing glass at eye level — the hour a Welgemoed lounge becomes unusable and a television washes out. No eave can stop a low, side-on sun; only something at the glass can. Pair that with a Cape Town summer UV index that runs 11 to 14 — rated “extreme” from October through March — and that afternoon load is heat, glare and fabric-fade at once. This is what the guide is really about.

High summer sun (easy to shade), low winter sun (worth keeping). A sunscreen roller or an adjustable external device beats a permanent blockout — up here you want to manage this light, not kill the winter warmth that comes with it.
Low, brutal 15:00–19:00 summer sun straight at eye level, and often the elevation with the biggest view glass. Heat and glare stopped outside the pane wins here; an interior blind is the fallback, not the ideal.
Bright, direct sunrise into bedrooms and breakfast rooms, gone by mid-morning. Blockout or a day/night blind for the sleep-in; the heat load is mild, so an interior blind is perfectly fine here.
Almost no direct winter sun, the least ventilation and the most winter damp on a slope that catches the north-west fronts. The enemy here is condensation and mildew, so moisture-tolerant surfaces beat soft fabric.

West & north-west glass · the afternoon-heat fix
On an unobstructed west elevation, stopping the sun outside the pane is the difference between a cool room and a warm one. External venetian slats intercept the low afternoon sun before it becomes heat inside, and they tilt so you keep the view instead of sealing the room dark. An interior blockout only absorbs that heat after it’s through the glass — the pane still radiates warmth into the room.
Hard-westerly glass · external shading on a manor facade
On the worst west and north-west glass — the room that bakes every summer afternoon — an external roller shutter is the heaviest sun, heat and glare control we fit: a slatted aluminium curtain that rolls down the outside of the window from a slim headbox, stopping the load before it touches the pane, and styled to sit quietly on a manor facade.
Shading, not security. These are shading shutters — made for sun, heat, glare and light control on the outside of the glass. They are not security-rated shutters; that is a different product we can quote on request.
View-facing lounge & dining glass
The whole reason most Welgemoed lounge glass exists is the outlook, so a mesh sunscreen fabric (3–5% openness) is usually the right everyday blind: it cuts glare and blocks most of that extreme summer UV while leaving the view down the slope intact as a soft picture. A blockout would trade the view for a darkness you don’t need in a living room by day.
Windows that need a view and night privacy
Because Welgemoed sits on a slope, plenty of homes are overlooked by the street or the property above — so a window often needs the view by day and a real screen after dark. A day/night (double-roller) blind carries alternating sheer and solid bands on one tube: line them up for a filtered view, offset them for near-solid privacy at night — one blind doing both jobs where a single sunscreen can’t cover after dark.
Dry bedrooms & studies wanting warmth + a proper sleep-in
Honeycomb blinds trap a layer of still air in their pleated cells, so they take the edge off both a 27°C February afternoon and a cold, damp June morning better than any flat fabric — the strongest insulator in the range, and available with a blockout cell for a dark bedroom. In a dry, decently ventilated bedroom or study up here, this is the comfort pick.
Damp south rooms, bathrooms, low-airflow kitchens
Welgemoed’s wet winters and least-ventilated south rooms are where soft fabric struggles. Aluminium venetian slats wipe clean, shrug off steam and condensation, and tilt for light and privacy — the durable answer in a bathroom or shaded south room where a cellular or roller blind would slowly take on moisture. In a dry living room or study, a wide-slat timber venetian is the better-looking version of the same idea and suits an established home.
The entertaining terrace · overhead summer shade
For a wide entertaining terrace built for a Sunday lunch with the view, a retractable folding-arm awning throws overhead shade across the whole table and rolls away when you want the winter sun back. On a north or west terrace it’s the difference between using the space at midday in February and abandoning it to the heat.
The terrace & view deck · wind, low sun & insects
The prevailing summer wind here is a strong south-easter — the “Cape Doctor” — and an elevated Welgemoed stand feels it harder than the valley floor. A normal drop-blind flaps and tears in it; a zip screen runs in zipped side channels so the fabric can’t flap, sealing a view deck against wind, low afternoon sun and insects, and turning it into a usable room on a gusty Cape evening without losing the outlook it was built for.
Wide, tall, view-facing & golf-course-facing glass
On the floor-to-ceiling and double-volume glass a Welgemoed manor home carries — much of it facing the view or the Bellville Golf Club fairways the suburb wraps around — a blind often runs past a comfortable hand-reach and past 3 m of fabric. A motor with a sun sensor also drops the west blinds before the room heats at four o’clock, and retracts an awning when the wind sensor triggers. Battery motors suit a retrofit; wired motors suit a new build.
Newer manor builds · frameless & double-volume glazing
The newer double-storey builds going up in Welgemoed run to frameless corners and double-volume glazing, and a headbox sitting proud of the glass — or a chain hanging metres down it — ruins exactly the clean line the architect drew. A concealed roller drops out of a slim ceiling slot or a plastered bulkhead, so raised, the window shows nothing but glass and frame.
A settled double-storey on a leafy Welgemoed street and a new build in a gated micro-estate are barely the same brief.
Welgemoed grew up around the Bellville Golf Club and is known for large, established family homes on quiet, tree-lined streets. On the older homes the job is careful and measured — deeper reveals, existing pelmets and window lines a treatment should sit neatly inside or above rather than fight. The newer double-storey builds are the opposite brief: walls of view-facing glass where heat load is the whole problem and motorisation is often unavoidable.
Welgemoed also has its gated and estate pockets — small secure enclaves like Vergezicht among them — and several of these run architectural or body-corporate guidelines. Anything fitted to the outside of the home — external venetians, roller shutters, awnings, zip screens — may need its colour and profile signed off first. We’d rather flag that at the quote than have you unpick it after it’s up.
